A great presentation takes more than smart preparation and execution of verbal skills. Body language is just as important, and the 2014 Toastmasters International world champion of public speaking Dananjaya Hettiarachchi reveals his four best tips on Business Insider’s Youtube video.

Great speakers keep their body open

Dananjaya shares that when people start their speech and get nervous, they try to cover their vital organs, such as folding hands, bring the hands in front of them. It is a sign of nervousness. He suggests when you are speaking, it is much better to let your body open, so that there is no barrier between you and the audience.

Have your palms open

When you are speaking, Dananjaya suggests to let your palms open. Your palm will relax the audience eyes. It creates an openness that connects with the audience and let the audience connect with you.

Get comfortable with the stage

Dananjaya says when you are comfortable on the stage that you are speaking on, your body is free to move about and use body language. If you feel foreign with the stage, your body will constrict and you start to cover your body up.

Do not touch the podium (if you have one)

Never touch the podium on the stage. Dananjaya shares as soon as you touch the podium, you are going to be leaning on it and to be shaking the podium. You can keep a comfortable distance between you and podium. Let your notes on it, but use your hand to gesture. Don’t rest your hands on the podium. So, keep the distance and let your body language move.

I always thought I had good body language until reading this. I never once thought of how my palms would make such a huge difference.
